A triathlon watch records swim, bike and run as one activity using a multisport mode, usually with transition times included. It also tracks open-water swims by GPS and shows pace, distance and heart rate in training. You do not need one for your first sprint triathlon, but it helps once you train regularly.
This guide explains the features that matter for triathlon, what the battery and water ratings mean, and lists some current models with UK prices. We have not tested any of these watches. Specs and prices are as the brand or retailer stated them when we checked on 6 October 2026, and prices change often.
Do you need a triathlon watch for your first sprint?
No. The race records your official time, so a watch adds nothing to your result. You can finish your first sprint triathlon racing on feel. If you already own a running watch, use it for the run and your training. Our guide to triathlon for beginners covers the kit you need first.
A triathlon watch earns its place when you:
- train several times a week and want to pace sessions by heart rate, speed or power;
- swim in open water and want distance and route recorded;
- want to see how long you spend in T1 and T2, the transitions from swim to bike and bike to run;
- plan longer races, where pacing the bike and run matters more.
What multisport mode does
A triathlon or multisport mode records the whole race as one activity, split into swim, T1, bike, T2 and run. On many watches you press a button to move from one leg to the next. Garmin states that the Forerunner 970 has multisport auto-transition for swim, bike and run, so the watch changes leg for you. On the Forerunner 570, Garmin lists triathlon among more than 30 activity profiles.
In training, the same mode is useful for brick sessions, a bike ride followed straight away by a run. Our brick workout guide explains how to set one up.
Open-water swim tracking
In open water the watch uses GPS to record distance and route. Check that the model lists an open-water swim mode, separate from pool swimming, which counts lengths instead. The Suunto Race 2 page lists open water swimming among its sport modes. Only swim in open water at supervised venues; our guide to open water swimming in London lists them.
Battery in GPS mode
The figure that matters is battery life with GPS recording, since that is what a race or long ride uses. Brands quote several figures depending on settings. For example, Garmin's manual for the Forerunner 970 gives up to 26 hours GPS-only, 23 hours with automatic satellite selection and 21 hours with all systems and multi-band. A sprint or standard triathlon is covered by any of the watches below. Battery matters more for long-distance racing and long training days.
Water rating
Brands express water resistance in different ways: Garmin uses ATM ratings, Polar uses WR ratings and Apple gives a depth. Read the brand's guidance on swimming, and rinse the watch in fresh water after a lake or lido swim.

Prices change, so check the shop before you buy. Based on the stated specs:
- If automatic transitions matter to you, the Forerunner 970 is the model here where the brand states multisport auto-transition.
- If you want a triathlon profile for less, the Forerunner 570 lists triathlon among its profiles at a lower price.
- If battery for long races comes first, the COROS PACE 4 Pro and Suunto Race 2 list the longest GPS figures, but we could not confirm a UK price.
- If you mainly run and want a lower price, the Polar Pacer Pro was on sale; check its open-water and transition features with Polar before you buy.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a triathlon watch for my first triathlon?
No. The race records your official time, so your result does not depend on a watch. For a first sprint triathlon you can race on feel, or use a simple running watch for the run. A triathlon watch becomes useful when you train regularly and want to pace by heart rate or speed, track open-water swims and see your transition times.
What does multisport mode do on a triathlon watch?
It records swim, bike and run, plus the transitions between them, as one activity. You press a button to move to the next leg, or on some watches the change happens automatically. Garmin states that the Forerunner 970 has multisport auto-transition for swim, bike and run. At the end you see each leg and transition separately as well as your total time.
Can I swim in open water with a triathlon watch?
Most multisport watches are designed to be worn while swimming, but check the water rating and the brand's guidance. The Forerunner 970 and 570 are rated 5 ATM, the Polar Pacer Pro WR50 and the Apple Watch Ultra 4 water resistant to 100 m. For open-water tracking, check the watch lists an open-water swim mode, as the Suunto Race 2 page does.
How much battery does a triathlon watch need?
Enough to cover your longest race or training day in GPS mode, with some margin. A sprint or standard triathlon needs only a few hours, which the listed watches cover. For long-distance racing, compare the GPS-only figures: Garmin states up to 26 hours for the Forerunner 970 and up to 18 hours for the Forerunner 570. Multi-band GPS and other settings reduce battery life.
